Star sprinter Hima Das faces suspension

Sprinter Hima Das faces suspension over whereabout failures

Whereabout failures lead to suspension

Renowned Indian sprinter Hima Das finds herself in a challenging situation as she has been provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). The suspension follows her three "whereabouts failures" within a 12-month period, sources report. This setback comes at a time when Hima was not included in the Hangzhou Asian Games team due to an injury she had previously suffered.

Hima Das, a 23-year-old athlete from Assam, is facing a maximum two-year ban as a consequence of these whereabouts failures. However, the duration of her suspension may be reduced to a minimum of one year depending on the severity of her violations. This development marks a significant setback for the Indian sprinter who had achieved recognition on the international stage.

Hima Das gained fame by winning a silver medal in the 400m individual event at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games. She was also a pivotal member of the gold and silver-winning women's 4x400m and mixed 4x400m relay teams in Jakarta. Her achievements had made her a celebrated figure in Indian athletics.

Understanding whereabout failures

Under the rules set forth by World Athletics Anti-Doping (WADA), any combination of three whereabouts failures within a 12-month timeframe constitutes a violation of anti-doping regulations. It is not clear whether Hima's whereabouts failures were related to filing or missed tests. Athletes included in the Registered Testing Pool (RTP) are required to provide their complete address for overnight stays, locations where they train or work, and their regular schedules. Additionally, they must specify a 60-minute daily window and location during which they are available for testing. Failure to adhere to these whereabouts and testing obligations results in whereabouts failures.

Injury concerns

In addition to her suspension, Hima Das has been grappling with persistent health issues, including a lower back problem. Earlier this year, she suffered a hamstring injury just before a Grand Prix event in Bengaluru. Consequently, she had to undergo medical investigation and treatment, which led to her absence from key events such as the Federation Cup in Ranchi in May and the National Inter-State Championship in June. The latter event was crucial for Asian Games team selection.
